|Treatment programme in Co-ordination & Massage for Dyslexia
|Who is suitable for treatment
The Co-ordination & Massage programme is suitable for almost anyone aged between 5 and 50.
Very mild to more severe learning difficulties or differences can be helped. Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADD
and ADHD are common diagnoses established on many of those participating on the Co-ordination and
Massage programme. In other cases it may be a difficulty with handwriting, calculation, concentration,
anxiety or poor self-esteem.
It is not necessary to have a specific diagnosis to participate in the programme. An initial assessment is
carried out to establish the programme's suitability for the individual in question. Assessment is on the
gross and fine motor skills, hand to eye co-ordination and ocular-motor skills.
What the programme involves
The Co-ordination & Massage programme is carried out over a period of twelve weeks. The
practitioner is attended weekly. Between visits, to reinforce the exercises involved, a short training
programme is carried out three times daily.
Conversation, encouragement and positive feedback are also important ingredients of each weekly visit.
Theoretical basis of treatment
The theory behind The Co-ordination & Massage programme is that learning difficulties/differences
occur when the connections between the brain and the muscles become disrupted or function poorly.
There may be many reasons for this happening. As a result the body does not do what we want and
poor co-ordination and concentration difficulties arise. This creates a stressful situation and stress
inhibits learning. With stress, muscle tension is inevitable.
Through massage muscle tension is alleviated, stress hormones are reduced and the calming hormone
oxytocin is increased. Together this effect creates an improved environment for learning.
Physical movement stimulates brain function. Improving co-ordination activates both brain
hemispheres equally, it also strengthens the myelin sheath in the nervous system, which enables the
neurotransmitters between the brain and the muscles to communicate better. These effects make the
learning process an easier one.

Areas of Improvement
Generally the areas we expect to see improvements in are comprehension of the various areas of
schoolwork (reading, spelling, maths and handwriting) plus an overall improvement in the areas of
organisation, communication, self-esteem and self-confidence. Signs of these improvements are noted as
early as three to five weeks after the training programme has commenced. The level of improvement in
each area varies from case to case.
